Beauty, pharmaceuticals and cosmetology seemed to collide this decade with the invention of many new beauty treatments. Everything from highly concentrated serums, to lip plumpers, safe forms of botulism injections we've come to know as botox, makeup made from pure minerals, meat preservatives that can be used to make your skin look tan, at home teeth whiteners and laser hair removal have become accessible to us. Trend Alert: Opaque Gold Nails

Metallic nail varnish has been widely popular for the past couple of years, and it looks like the trend is sticking around for at least the rest of Summer. Celebrities like Fergie, painted her digits a rich gold at a Black Eyed Peas event last night in Los Angeles, whilst Lily Allen gallivanted around London on Tuesday evening with gilded nails. Coming Soon: Illamasqua Powdered Metals

Due out 13th July is a new face powder from Illamasqua called Powdered Metals (£22). At first glance it looks similar to a bronzer or a large vat of loose shimmer shadow, and actually it's both of these products and a whole lot more! I love it because it's multi-purpose, and in the face of a credit crunch, let's face it, individual beauty products just aren't as practical.

Powdered Metals will be available in three shades (Erzule, Bebhionn and Thalia) to best suit varying skin tones. Unlike the intense star product from the Sirens Collection called Liquid Metals, it was designed to create a golden sheen (not shimmer) that makes you look like you're glowing from the inside out.

It can be worn all over the face, as a body shimmer, an eye shadow or simply dusted along your collarbone and in your hair for a hint of the Midas touch. Personally, I like wearing it on the highest parts of my cheekbones, the bridge of my nose, temples and chin as a highlighter.

Erzule , the Voodoo Goddess of Beauty, is a goldeny bronze with a brown base that looks best on those with olive or ebony skin tones.
Thalia, the Greek Goddess of Poetry, is a warm bronze with a gold undertone that is best suited for medium skin tones.
Bebhion, is the Irish Goddess of Pleasure, is the lightest bronze shade with pink undertones. This looks great against pale or fair skin.

Metallic Makeup: Hot or Not?

Metallic makeup first came onto the mainstream beauty radar in the late 90s, with Jennifer Lopez being the poster girl for glowing skin – teamed with metallic gold eyeshadow and shimmering cheekbones.

Next season, nails are a steely metallic, whilst gold and silver shadow seems a natural complement to the gothic lace, heavy fringing and dramatic matte hair dos, that we'll soon be coveting.

The light-reflecting, iridescent quality of metallics makes them catwalk and fashion shoot beauty staples, but for real life, they tend to polarise opinions.

Like Marmite, you either love or hate metallics. So which one will it be?

Trend Alert: Metallic Nails

On the Autumn/Winter runways at Chanel, Galliano, Prada, and Dior, the mood was all about dark, soft goth appeal and gutsy, edgy glamour.

Nails were darkly metallic, in shades of burnished bronze, glossy crimson, steely silver and shimmering black. After summer's love affair with bright lights, bold colour varnishes – such as canary yellow or bright orange – autumn's mood is more grown-up.

Nails should be slightly longer this season, just peeking over the edge of the finger tips. Keep the shape curved and natural, for a polished effect.

If you only buy one polish, make it Chanel's Le Vernis in Kaleidoscope, (£14.50), it's a perfect metallic shade that suits all skin tones.

I also like Revlon Gold Get 'Em, a pale gold that looks more grown-up than last winter's brassy shades. While, Miss Sporty's Zodiac, (£1.99), at Superdrug, is a cool, metallic beige nude, that works well for a subtle nod to the trend.

I'm smitten by Paul & Joe's smoulderingly, dark metallic shade, 20, as well, for Grecian-style nails. Or try their hard-edged, bright silver Paul & Joe in 21, (£9), to wear with Christopher Kane's oversize sequin-encrusted collection, this fall.

Trend Alert: Metallic Shoes at the NME Awards

At last night's NME Awards, everybody came dressed to impress from head to toe. One of the shoe trends I noticed besides just about everyone showing up in some type of platform heel was the onset of metallic shoes. Alice Dellal wore a figure-skating inspired pair of silver lace up boots, Little Boots wore a pair of double platform silver peep-toes with writing on them and Emilia Fox wore a pair of gunmetal-gold snakeskin heels. I love me a little sparkle and shoes are a perfect way to dress up any outfit. Do you own a pair of metallic shoes?

Stylesight Weigh in with Oscar Beauty Predictions

Oscar time is nearly here and I am beyond excited! I can't wait to see the flashbulbs on Sunday, and all those gorgeous dresses and hairstyles. I've been following the award season beauty trends for a while and I have a few ideas of what to expect, but I thought it was worth catching up with an expert.

Andrea Praet is the trend director at top New York trends prediction agency Stylesight and I managed to grab her just in time. To check out her top Oscar beauty predictions, just read more.

What are your beauty predictions for Sunday evening? For hair, expect to see pretty, feminine loose styles continuing. This coif is more relaxed and less fussy, allowing the actresses' confidence and natural beauty to shine through. Modern braiding and twisting in asymmetric styles are also likely to make an appearance as they are the style du jour.
The smokey eye is ideal for sultry drama that's sure to make an impact on the Red Carpet. Expect to see subdued metallics, in shades of pewter and lavender, with accents of shimmering white that highlight the brow and cheek bone. And plenty of mascara. Thick, gorgeous lashes are always a must. Lips are another key area of the face that's receiving well deserved attention as of late. Creamy rich shades of red-orange and fuschia are sure to enhance the evening's glamour!

Nails are going dusty and light. Chalky shades of grey and beige are the new neutral, and pastel shades of lavender and pistachio are the girly alternative..

Which actresses do you think will be more daring with their look? Actress, Carey Mulligan of An Education, seems to be taking bold risks. She recently turned her pixie cut from auburn to blonde. Perhaps she'll turn up the volume on her make-up as well. She's been known to do a dramatic liquid liner cat eye, now all she needs is a statement-making lip to match!
