Since the girls at Donna Karan and Louis Vuitton stormed the Spring/Summer runways with matte, made-up faces, it figures that the art of blotting is having a resurgence. After all, if you follow Dita Von Teese's lead and go for a full face of makeup, with a matte base, the last thing you want are shiny patches peeking through.

If ever there was a night to pull out all of the stops with your makeup, it's new year's eve! Bat your lashes to lure 'em in and then pucker up with a pretty pout for a midnight kiss. Think about how your pal the party girl would do make herself up and then have a go at it yourself.

Think of the Hollywood stars of the '40s like Rita Hayworth or Greta Garbo and you'd imagine that they would be having their makeup applied in front of flashbulb lined mirrors, perhaps wearing black silk elbow length gloves while smouldering prettily. They'd certainly be using a classic vanity case such as Dior's new Backstage Beauty Box (£250). Luckily for modern day starlets this set is now available to buy exclusively at Selfridges, as part of their Christmas collection.

Most obviously is, don't follow Kate Moss's lead and upstage the bride by looking too goddamn gorgeous. Or at least don't look like you're trying to upstage her – more that you're just naturally prettier.
