Nottingham Trent University opened the second day of Graduate Fashion Week 2009. The university famously associated with Sir Paul Smith always presents a good selection of students and today was no exception. There was a wide range of styles on show for both mens and womenswear including many knitwear designers.

Nottingham Trent has got one of the best names for fashion design outside of London. They produce high quality students with Paul Smith being the most famous (and proud) of their alumni, regularly sponsoring the graduate show. This years graduates were impressive with many of the young designers including knitwear in their collections.

And so Graduate Fashion Week is over for another year as the graduates go off in to the fashion design world and attempt to make their mark. There has been some exceptional talent on show this year so even being shortlisted is a tremendous honour. Caryn Franklin hosted the awards with three main prizes up for grabs, the River Island Gold Award, Zandra Rhodes Catwalk Textiles Award and the Pringle of Scotland Visionary Knitwear Award.

On Wednesday night the Fashion Awareness Direct awards took place celebrating the best young design talent from across the country. Alicia Stone, 21, from Nottingham Trent University (below left with her design) walked away with the top prize for her ‘wearable, buyable and covetable’ outfit. The design brief requested that students should create one outfit that could be transformed through additional layers, altering its silhouette to create a new outfit from the original piece.
