Last night, the 2009 Fashion Fringe competition launched in London with a star studded party. It was hosted by Vanity Fair, Donatella Versace and Colin McDowell who began the search for the next big name in fashion. Donatella resumed her position as honorary chairperson and revealed support for 2009 from a range of guests including Natalie Massenet of net-a-porter, Antoni Burakowski, of Antoni and Alison, and Grazia's Paula Reed.

Last night saw the airing of the first episode of British Style Genius which is a documentary looking at the best elements of British fashion. Here is a quick recap of the episode although if you missed it I strongly recommend catching up on Iplayer.
The series began with a look at Kate Moss for Topshop and it's impact on the High Street.

The Fashion Fringe competition has become a major part of British fashion. Discovering brands such as Basso & Brooke, Aminaka Wilmont and Erdem, it is now in it's fifth year headed up by Colin McDowell with guest judge Donatella Versace. Today in Covent Garden they held the final part of the competition in the midst of London Fashion Week.

The current financial climate is unsteady to say the least. Words and phrases such as 'recession' and 'credit crunch' are thrown around as readily as 'boho' might have been three years ago. Baring this in mind, right now seems like an odd time to launch a new high fashion magazine.

It has just been announced that fashion writer Colin McDowell MBE is the new Creative Editor at Large of online e-tailer Net-a-Porter. The announcement comes as the site continues to grow with recent additions such as the online magazine. McDowell will work alongside Net-A-Porter’s Editor, Claudia Plant as the company introduces video content.

Last night The Sunday Times hosted an evening with Roberto Cavalli at London College of Fashion as Colin McDowell held a conversation with the designer about his history and his designs. In between offers of a stay in Florence, a copy of his painted portrait and small gifts Roberto Cavalli treated a small audience to an evening of fun showing how one man can achieve so much through sheer passion.
Colin McDowell began the interview asking Cavalli about how he broke in to the world of fashion and despite being concerned that his English wasn't going to be good enough, he talked about the beginning of his career in Florence and life as an artist.

Fashion Fringe is a prestigious award and has launched the careers of many famous names including Basso and Brooke, Erdem and more recently William Tempest. The winning ceremony takes place during London Fashion Week and is judged by Donatella Versace, Natalie Massenet of net-a-porter, Colin McDowell and Grazia's Paula Reed.
The ten semi-finalists have just been announced as Damba Mihrican, Edna Cole, Elliot Atkinson, Go Tell Them, Jasper Garvida, LD.DA, Masha Ma, Romia Karamanea, Teatum Jones and Yelena Smirnova.

This week saw the launch of new digest magazine Distill. Back in June we revealed the plans for the publication, which is a collection of the best style press from around the world. It officially launched on Tuesday morning at London's trendy Sketch with a breakfast hosted by Editor in Chief Colin McDowell.
