You probably know by now that I simply can't get enough of this season's big, bird's nest hair styles. From Guido's matte creations at Marc Jacobs to Girls Aloud's Sarah Harding's bouffant do, it's all about messy, voluminous styles. X-Factors' wannabe star Diana Vickers was sporting an amazing look on this weekend's programme.

From the candyfloss creations on the catwalks to hair maestro Guido's love for huge piles of bird's nest hair, it seems that voluminous dos are everywhere. When Sarah Harding, Mischa Barton and Daisy Lowe are all supersizing their barnets, you know this is a trend with staying power.
I have naturally big, unruly hair and after years of trying to smooth it down with creams and serums, it's quite liberating to just go au natural.

Sarah Harding partied with the rest of Girls Aloud (minus Cheryl) at Whisky Mist in London this weekend. Never one who's afraid to steal the limelight, Sarah went for big, back-combed hair in a bright vanilla ice cream shade of blonde. The matte texture and voluminous style looked straight off the catwalk, where candyfloss hair has been a backstage staple for a while now.

Actress and front row fashionista Mischa Barton was looking glowing at the Vanity Fair party at Milan Fashion Week. She went for a natural makeup look, with a rose coloured lip gloss, black lined eyes and peachy blush. Her skin always looks flawless but I thought she looked slightly tired in this picture.

Now, I don't know about you, but I've been obsessing about matte hair for a while now. Since seeing those first catwalk pics of Candyfloss hair, not to mention the polished dreadlocks trend – I've been trying to wean myself off the super-shiny look.
The man behind this trend is hairdresser Guido Palau.

Messy hair – with plenty of polished dreadlock-style texture, or candyfloss hair fluff, has been on our radar for a while now.
However, it's interesting that Jennifer Aniston – who pioneered the glossy, super-straight, girl-next-door hair, has taken this new trend on board.
Her dark blonde hair is looking crimped, wavy, and slightly fluffy as she leaves a restaurant in LA.

Shelve the straightening irons! The new hair trend on the block is all about matte texture and huge, cartoon proportions. The Spring/Summer catwalks featured hair-do's that were big and backcombed - from disheveled up-do's at Roberto Cavalli and John Galliano, to whispy knots and ridiculously exaggerated piles of hair at Moschino and Peter Jensen.

A little bit glamour, a little bit grunge – this season's matted hair texture takes inspiration from hippie dreadlock styles, and gives a fresh look to summer hair.
Think full-on dreadlocks at Etro, matte hair at Lanvin, or just lots of texture at Balmain and Preen.
Like with the candyfloss hair trend, this summer, the polished dreadlocks look is about working with the natural texture of the hair, as oppose to creating an overly fake, super shiny look.

The term bird's nest hair refers to an oversize hair do that's often piled on the top of the head. It usually looks rather messy and disheveled as though a flock of birds or family of small rodents could be living in there. The phrase normally refers to long hair that has been pinned or tied back into a bouffant style, with plenty of volume at the crown.

The beehive, so named because it resembles a beehive (like, duh?) is currently having something of a renaissance, mostly thanks to troubled-singer, Amy Winehouse and the latest catwalk trend for piles of candyfloss-like hair.
It originated in the USA in 1958, and reached the height (sorry, I couldn't resist) of it's popularity in the 60s. Audrey Hepburn sports a stylish beehive in Breakfast at Tiffany's, whilst in Hairspray, set in 1962, Tracy Turnblad's beehive gets ever taller and more flamboyant, as she joins the social scene.
