2011 Autumn London Fashion Week

Interview

Saloni Lodha Tells Us About Her Latest Collection

It feels like a lifetime ago, but just a few weeks ago London played host to the Autumn/Winter '11 shows and I found five minutes to catch up with Saloni designer Saloni Lodha.

It feels like a lifetime ago, but just a few weeks ago London played host to the Autumn/Winter '11 shows and I found five minutes to catch up with Saloni designer Saloni Lodha. She held a presentation during the fashion showcase which introduced her latest beautiful collection.

Saloni is a relatively new brand (just three years old), but it already has a celebrity following which includes Poppy Delevigne and Emma Watson.

What is your background?
I starting selling first and I used to do pop-up boutiques in Hong Kong. I'm Indian and moved to London 6 years ago to follow my now husband.

What has inspired you for Autumn/Winter 2011?
Inspiration for the collection came from a photographer who captured Northern Sky lights. From there, I started looking at Google Earth maps and got really into the textures of the prints. The clothes really catch the light and the earth. The makeup and hair on the girls are natural and organic but have an edge and a bit of a vintage feel

Why did you choose to do a presentation over a runway show?
I chose to do a presentation instead of a show because of all of the separates that I show and I didn't feel comfortable putting a t-shirt on a catwalk. Plus, this kind of atmosphere allows me to speak with journalists in a more intimate setting. Rosie Chan the pianist is here and I'm very excited to be collaborating with her.

Alexa Chung Doesn't Think She's a Style Icon

Alexa Chung attended many shows at London Fashion Week and has taken to defending a fellow front row star; Anna Wintour.
Alexa Chung at London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2011

Alexa Chung attended many shows at London Fashion Week and has taken to defending a fellow front row star; Anna Wintour. Alexa has been talking about the US Vogue editor-in-chief commenting, "I feel like her reputation comes from the fact she's a woman and she's incredibly successful so people like to speculate about whether she's cut-throat and mean, when she's actually not. She's a really smart businesswoman just getting her job done."

I am always excited to see what Alexa wears and this season was no exception. However, she thinks that she doesn't deserve her British Fashion Award for Style Icon. She said, "It might be premature. I always think of icons as women from previous decades who demonstrated a finesse in the fashion industry for many years and accumulated the praise gradually, whereas that seems to be a label that was stuck on me overnight. It's incredibly flattering but also quite daunting." Click through to see Alexa's fashion week looks and tell me if you agree with her comments.

2011 Autumn London Fashion Week: Ashish

London Fashion Week came to a close for me with the Ashish show at Somerset House.
Photos of Ashish Autumn Winter 2011 at London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week came to a close for me with the Ashish show at Somerset House. It was a typically fun collection that was colourful and included plenty of sequins! This season, Ashish interpreted heritage in his own way playing with tartan and union jack prints. He gave the collection a punk edge with moth eaten knits, asymmetric zips and safety pin detailing. There was also a bones print piece and blazers adorned with political slogans. Ashish designed this line with a "poor little rich girl" in mind hence the contrast in some cases with boxy jackets and collared shirts teamed with slouchy tartan.

  • Trends: heritage, sequins, punk.
  • Colours: Blue, white, red, yellow, moss green, brown.
  • Accessories: Brothel creepers.
  • Key look: Cropped bones top with low slung tartan trousers.
  • Who would wear this: Rebels without a cause.

Christopher Kane is always innovative with his designs and this season he created pieces using unusual plastic pockets filled with coloured liquid (vegetable oil and glycerine). The result was a sci-fi collection with zig-zag neckline and innovative dresses. Kane was inspired by soda streams and lava lamps for the pieces. One of the dresses from the collection has already been worn by Natalie Massenet who called Kane "a genius".

  • Trends: sci-fi, sheer, luxe eveningwear.
  • Colours: Black, blue, red.
  • Accessories: Mary jane heels and squidgy plastic clutch.
  • Key look: Liquid filled cocktail dress.
  • Who would wear this: Fashion forward party girls
