Besides mermaid dresses on the BAFTA Award's red carpet there were also plenty of ruffles and tiers. In my opinion, Freida stole the show in a gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown which complemented her complexion. Emily Mortimer also went for tiers in a bow adorned Yves Saint Laurent dress and red carpet host Alesha Dixon wore a black Giovanni ruffled frock with elegant evening gloves and sleek straight hair.

All of the nominees who chose to walk tonight's BAFTA Awards red carpet wearing their hair up came out on top. About halfway through the glamorous coverage, the skies opened up and the rains came pouring down. Luckily, umbrellas and willing assisants were there to shield the dresses, tuxedo's and all of the hard work of makeup artists and hair dressers.

Last night's BAFTA Awards provided plenty of glamour as most of the ladies opted for maxi dresses (perhaps a sign of the economic times). However, another trend emerged as several of the girls opted for mermaid shaped dresses. Penelope Cruz revealed her shoulders in an Alaia dress with Chopard jewels.

Wow I have been really impressed with this year's BAFTA Award's red carpet. There has been such a high standard that I'm glad I'm leaving it to you guys to decide who was the best dressed, and what a choice you have. From red carpet veterans like Angelina in Armani Prive couture and Kate Winslet in Zac Posen to newcomer Freida in Oscar de la Renta.

Fearne Cotton was interviewing the stars on the red carpet tonight and boy was she prepared for the cold British climate. Earlier in the evening she explained on her twitter, "outfit for the baftas is gold short dress, 3 pairs of tights (it's gonna be cold) and massive yeti style jacket!!" I guess she learnt her lesson the hard way after having bare legs in the snow earlier in the week.

Bond girl Gemma Arterton looked lovely and polished in a long and covered up dress perfect for the cold winter weather. Her hair was styled in a complex updo with fringe swept to one side, and her face looked smooth and porcelain-like with the emphasis on her full berry-coloured lips and smoky eyes. How do you feel about Gemma's red carpet beauty look?

Pretty young Emma Watson arrived in a floor-length Alice Temperley gown and adorable undone plaits. Her makeup was age-appropriate and not too heavy, rather is accentuated her fresh face and sparkly eyes. What are your thoughts on Emma's BAFTA's hair and makeup?

Emily Mortimer's Yves Saint Laurent dress may well have matched the London sky, but the bow and animal skin detailing added glamour to the look. She increased the glitz with jewels by Van Cleef & Arpels and a chic clutch. What do you think of her red carpet style?
