Fab Field Day: New York Fashion Week

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be taken to New York Fashion Week with a group of European fashion bloggers for the launch of the latest Sony VAIO products. The new CS11 VAIO notebook aims to bridge the ever-closing gap between fashion and technology using bold colours and a new, easier to hold shape. Whilst there we visited Central Park, saw Equus on Broadway and checked out the famous Fifth Avenue stores. I also managed to catch the Twinkle by Wenlan show at Bryant Park.

Although I began shopping at the classic department stores like Bergdorf Goodman and Bloomingdale's, I soon traveled downtown to check out the boutiques in Soho. I especially loved Poppy, Opening Ceremony and any one of the six Marc Jacobs shops. I also popped in to Sephora for my girl BellaSugar and stocked up on Kiehl's before heading to Walgreens for Cherry Chapstick! Lastly, I got myself up to speed with some of my favourite US magazines like Nylon, Paper and New York Times Style.

Will You Wear Nude Lip Colours?

The new makeup collections for autumn showcase a plethora of barely-there beiges and pink nudes to chose from this season. Bobbi Brown has an entire line entitled Shimmering Nude, whilst the Nars collection features glistening neutral lip colours with pared-down sheer formulations.

Already it seems that nude lips, whether matte, sheer or ultra glossy, will still be going strong next spring. At New York Fashion Week the models at Peter Som, (pictured), Mathew Williamson, Preen and Vivienne Tam all wore variations on the nude lip.

In real life, a nude lip colour can be tricky to wear especially if you're pale. Plus I have to admit that it can be time consuming to find the perfect neutral shade that looks both flattering and insouciantly effortless. Will you be wearing nude lip colours this season?

Freaky or Fabulous? Marc Jacobs in a Skirt

New York Fashion Week isn't just about the shows, there are also a whole lot of parties! After his show this week, Marc Jacobs attended Jennifer Hudson's album launch celebration with friend Victoria Beckham.

Marc is never one to shy away from controversy so his outfit choice isn't exactly surprising. He wore a blue a-line skirt with gladiator sandals and a classic black shirt.

I'm not sure what Marc was going for here. If he'd have opted for a tartan skirt then it would clearly be a nod to the Scottish, but now I'm not sure what I make of it. Do you think this look is freaky or fabulous?

Agyness Shows Off New Bob

Just when we thought that New York Fashion Week couldn't show us any more hair surprises, Agyness Deyn stole the limelight from Victoria Beckham by unveiling her brand new bob yesterday at the shows. It's typical of on-trend Agyness to have updated her look, just when it seemed everyone was copying her crop.

This new, short, yet sharp cut looks striking with Agyness' bleach blonde colour and has a retro feel that brings to mind the flapper girls of the 20's. It's also more groomed, feminine, shiny and polished than her previous spiky, street-chic cut.

The haircut debuted at the Michael Kors show and was teamed with matte red lipstick and dark brows. I really like it, however, I'm sure it won't be long before she changes it again - the the girl does love to experiment.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Michael Kors

It's quite grey here in London today so imagine how much Michael Kors has managed to brighten up my day with his Spring 2009 collection. The fun, playful line from Michael Kors was shown yesterday morning as part of New York Fashion Week.

There were plenty of polka dots, stripes and even a bit of tartan in the line which used a bright colour palette of tomato red, canary yellow and cobalt blue. He took inspiration of '50s pin-up girls with high waist lines and wide brim hats. There was also a '90s vibe with midrifts revealed and Pretty Woman style power dresses.

Waists were clinched with solid colour belts and sleeves were cropped.

All these bright colours leave me mourning the end of summer and counting down the days til next Spring!

Vivienne Tam's Feminine Glory

The pretty florals and ruffles on the Vivienne Tam runway at New York Fashion Week had an innocent and playful air. The sculptured, striking makeup looks gave an edge to the feminine styles we'll all be wearing next season. Simple hair and muted metallics gave the beauty looks lust-have appeal. Front Row Beauty: Jessica Alba vs Claire Danes

At New York Fashion Week, the beautiful people have certainly come out to party. The Narciso Rodriguez show, in particular, was a hot bed of beauty with American actresses Jessica Alba and Claire Danes sat next to each other on the front row.

Claire was working the new season's penchant for barely-there lip colour combined with dewy skin and a touch of white shimmer on her eyelids. Meanwhile, Jessica went for a more smouldering look with plum lipstick, smoky eyes and a baby pink blush.

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Matthew Williamson

British designer Matthew Williamson took his Spring 2009 collection to New York Fashion Week yesterday presenting a line of beautifully structured dresses. Incorporating plenty of colour and spangle, the designer also used the opportunity to launch his accessories line.

Bright floral prints were trimmed with gold to create a boho party style that is sure to go down nicely in Ibiza next summer. His Pucci experience did not go unnoticed with references to the classic Italian style. Tribal detailing gave the floaty dresses more definition and edge.

Waists were clinched in with oversized or skinny belts. Trouser suits were bright yet tailored with 7/8th trousers and broad shouldered jackets. Williamson used brocade prints but updated with shots of metallic or neon pink. He also experimented with patent leather but softened it with soft, floral jackets and blouses.

With the return of Boho/Bopo, expect to see a lot more of Williamson and designs inspired by his work for next Spring.

Backstage Pass: Proenza Schouler's Wartime Glamour

While most of you love the blue eyeshadow trend that was revived by Proenza Schouler this summer, next spring is going to be all about a 40's wartime look with deep red lips and matte skin.

At New York Fashion Week the duo showed rock chick-meets-femme fatale clothes while the beauty look took it's cue from the World War II era with matte red pouts and polished hair. Diane Kendal created the runway look for MAC, and according to WWD she got that vamp lip look by mixing a red pigment with a neon pink sheen. Look-at-me lips combined with strong brows and natural, fresh-faced skin had an air of timeless elegance, whilst just a touch of bronzer was added across the bottom of the cheekbones for a contouring effect.

The hair also worked a retro beauty look but this time the reference was the Great Gatsby period with hairstyles concocted by Didier Malige for GHD.

“The look is very 1920s - with longer hair brought to one side,” said Omar Lopez, lead stylist for GHD. The hair look was a modern take on the flapper girl finger-wave curl, created by gently rocking the GHD heat styler back and forth down four sections of the hair, for a not-too-perfect effect. In contrast to the matte textures of the clothing, stylists added tons of shine, according to Lopez, to imitate the shiny accessories on the catwalk.

The bright orange-red lips against simple matte skin and wavy hair may be a classic retro look but it feels fresh and modern here. Plus you don't need to be model-perfect to pull it off. Come next spring we may all be looking like wartime pin-ups.

Look for Less: Leighton Meester at DVF

Leighton Meester may be new to the fashion week game but she dresses very well! On Sunday she attended the Diane von Furstenberg show in a yellow dress. Despite being quite young, she manages to look very classic and elegant whilst still retaining her youthful appeal. This is achieved through careful accessories choices. The yellow dress could have been overwhelming but she breaks up the colour with a black belt and adds edgy accessories including zip detail heels to make the look more contemporary. Her clutch is by Jimmy Choo but there are plenty of cheaper alternatives on the High Street. See below to copy her look.
