It's not very often that Silvio Berlusconi comes up in fashion conversations, but this week there has been a lot of talk of the Italian Prime Minister. Before he was attacked in Milan on Sunday night, he revealed that he was not wearing a vest. The move was aimed at proving that he was still "young and on form". This got me wondering about how common vests are these days. I have been known to wear one on really cold days, how about you – do you wear a vest?

What is a vest in American English? I have a feeling I'm missing something. Is this like a t-shirt?
1I agree with Bella; does the word "vest" mean something different in England? I wonder because one; why would the Italian Prime Minister say that and what would it have to do with him getting attacked (I guess if he is talking about a bullet-proof vest, but still)?; and two; I personally don't think that a vest can only be worn when it's cold.
2Sooo; is a vest something different?
