Until a few seasons ago jodhpurs were reserved for horse riding and general equestrian activities. They're seemingly unflattering shape did not lend itself well to fashion, particularly because of loose fit at the top.
Then, as part of its Autumn 2007 collection, Balenciaga paired them with a smart blazer and suddenly they were announced as a trouser style. Jodhpurs are defined as, 'wide-hipped riding pants of heavy cloth that fit tightly from knee to ankle.'

i feel like every season or so, one of the big designers tries to infuse these pants into their collection. like i feel ralph lauren tried a bit to add them, and so did prada a few years back i think (but i could be wrong on that one). i don't know if they would truly be flattering on anyone unless they were super skinny since they do emphasize a girls hips, but i think that it's something that people keep trying to bring to the mainstream.
