Last week, German fashion magazine Brigitte announced plans to ban professional models from its pages. The move was taken in an attempt to address the size zero debate and has received a mixed response. This weekend Karl Lagerfeld added his two cents to the debate.
Speaking to German online magazine Focus, Karl controversially commented. "No one wants to see curvy women. You've got fat mothers with their bags of chips sitting in front of the television and saying that thin models are ugly." He went on to explain that the world of fashion was about "dreams and illusions".
The news comes as London based designer Mark Fast vows to use plus size models again following his much debated catwalk show for Spring 2010. Mark explained, “I didn’t think it would get so much attention. I just thought, ‘They’re beautiful. Let’s do it. Let’s have fun.’” What do you think of Karl's views on curvy women?

I think Karl is missing the point. Women don't want to see unhealthy models- overweight or underweight.
1Clothes ought to be made for the living.
2I suppose, if your target market is all super-skinny women, then go ahead and use super-skinny models exclusively. If you expect real women to buy your stuff, however, then you should make and market your clothes for them!
3At this point I just see Karl as one those elderly people who make really audacious comments who you just smile, nod and roll your eyes at.
4Wow, what an incredibly scathing remark. He has been in fashion long enough to realize that beauty does not necessarily equate a size 0 and "curvy" doesn't mean Rosanne Barr circa 1993. When Cindy Crawford was in her heyday she wore a size 6. Then there was Anna Nicole Smith who was the was the most celebrated of the Guess ad models (Claudia Schiffer running a close second) who was at the same time gracing the pages of Playboy and we all know Anna was no where near a size zero.
5Let's also not forget that Karl himself used to be overweight. I wonder if his comments come from some kind of self-loathing: the fat kid who can't believe he lost weight and looks good so hates on all the other fat kids to make sure people know he's not one of them anymore?
He also at one time said "Who's Heidi Klum?". Idiot.
