Spring 2013 catwalks have been full of sheer layers, none more so than in Milan where Bottega Veneta and CNC Costume National showed transparent tops, Emilio Pucci focused on trousers, and Alberta Ferretti and Roberto Cavalli went the whole nine yards in dresses and matching separates. The trend was prevalent in London too, from see-through embroidered sheaths at Erdem and dresses with strategic panels at Topshop Unique to maxi skirts at Temperley and barely-there tops at Christopher Kane and House of Holland. Sheer inserts were also big news in New York, with skin-baring details at the midriff at Jason Wu, the décolletage at Victoria Beckham, in cropped blouses at Marc Jacobs and on lace dresses at BCBG Max Azria.

While the trend is easier to incorporate into a hot weather wardrobe, there's no need to wait until Spring to jump on board. Autumn sheer layers benefit from following a few guidelines, like layering up both underneath and on top, and keeping the see-through detail to just one statement top, bottom or dress.
