Emilia Wickstead fan Kate Middleton may be slightly surprised next time she looks to the designer for something soft, pretty and pastel for a public appearance. The designer went a much edgier route for Autumn/Winter 2014, swapping the wools and crepes for leather and snakeskin and the pretty pastels and muted shades for bold black, orange, and coral pink.

There were still styles that Wickstead's society lady devotees will snap up, including a high-neck black dress with a full skirt and 3/4-length sleeves, a dramatic lace coat dress with wide lapels and a ballet-length full skirt, and a pale blue cocktail dress and matching evening coat with a black placement print. But the leather trenches, snakeskin pencil skirts and orange lace crop top showed a move towards a younger and more adventurous customer less interested in "appropriate" clothes.

It was a surprising move from the designer, especially as other designers known for their youthful designs chose this season to be more subtle and mature. Perhaps this style swap will work well for Wickstead and help her be known as more than just the designer of pale pink frocks?
