Print Refreshed — Fashion Week Pairings Breathe New Life Into Plaid

Plaid is a staple Autumn print ripe for an update, and the Spring 2013 catwalks have certainly done just that.

Plaid is a staple Autumn print ripe for an update, and the Spring 2013 catwalks have certainly done just that. The resurgence of '90s grunge has seen the checkered style in firm favour, but this time with a twist thanks to clever print and fabric pairings. Dries Van Noten's show at Paris Fashion Week teamed plaid with sheer floaty florals, intricate embellishment and punchy metallics. Over at Milan Fashion Week, the Max Mara show teamed the Fall classic with leopard print resulting in a safari vibe, while the sheer styling was taken to the extreme at New York Fashion Week when Jill Stuart showed an ivory plaid three-quarter sleeve fitted dress. Shop my plaid pairings below and tell me how you'll bring a fresh twist to the print!

Yesterday at New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham presented her second line, Victoria, Victoria Beckham, having shown her mainline at the weekend. The British designer's collection was inspired by the southern California lifestyle and the VVB girl is in the art world and blogs: "She's very cool. I want to be her, and if I can't be her, I want to hang out with her". This laid-back attitude was evident in the short shift with purple palm tree print, blue-on-black bud print fit-and-flare silhouette, and khaki with safari details. Ms Beckham added: "This isn't the usual second line. I never wanted to compromise on the quality. It's more a case that this line is focussed on daywear, which means I can put more evening looks in the Victoria Beckham range." Take a look at the full collection here and tell me what you think!

  • Trends: Southern California, sleeveless block coloured shifts, contrasting bodices, Summer prints.
  • Colors: Blue, black, white, lemon, taupe and khaki.
  • Key Piece: The palm tree print epitomised the laid-back daywear aesthetic.
  • Accessories: Neon wedges by Steiger, thick clear coloured bracelets and cross-body bags worn high.
  • Who Should Wear It: Laid-back women who like clean lines and bold prints: Michelle Williams and Emma Watson.

Celebrities on the front row at New York Fashion Week this weekend proved that white needn't be confined to the Summer months only. The old adage of packing away your little white dresses after Labor Day (the first Monday in September) clearly no longer holds true, as Alexa Chung wore sheer and floaty Carven to the Elle Fashion Next Runway Show and Anna Dello Russo went with an embellished LWD the Emporio Armani Flagship Opening on Friday, while Kelly Osbourne showed how to work a bodycon version yesterday at Zac Posen's presentation.
